Evening rituals are often valued in terms of their ability to promote sleep, but I happen to think the incentives of a strategic wind-down routine run deeper, and are so much more than soporific.
Yes, it’s of course always nice to clock up the obligatory 8 hours, but whether this comes to fruition or not, takes little away from how worthwhile it is lighting the candles, running the bath, spritzing the pillow mist and ultimately…drawing a line under the day.
This, for the most part, is my greatest argument for beginning what some might call ‘getting ready for bed’… at 6pm.
The process has been helped along recently, but discovering the ‘sleep’ range of bed and bath essentials from Healing Alternatives. This all-natural range of relaxing, restorative home and bodycare products includes a Spiced Orange & Clove candle, CBD, Lavender and Clary Sage bath salts and Sleep Easy Pillow Spray (with CBD, Lavender and Peppermint.)
For times when you need a little extra help ‘switching off’, these products’ calmative ingredients can help set the tone for both relaxation, and slumber, by soothing the senses, calming the mind and - in the case of the bath salts - easing tired limbs.
As a regular runner, I’d credit much of the therapeutic gains of my new routine to this particular effect. Not least, because what running takes out, self-care must put back in, and this is often hard to achieve without targeted support for the body’s rest and repair processes.
What this support should look like, has a high margin for individuality, but if there’s one thing that all good post-run ‘wind down’ rituals have in common, it’s candle-lit comfort, warmth… and maybe some clary sage for good measure!
