Unpacking the myth of ‘no added sugar!’

Updated: Nov 4

I’ve been getting increasingly annoyed, recently, at the extent to which sweeteners have sabotaged my once-favourite drinks.

As if it isn’t bad enough that Ribena and Lucozade were lost to the aspartame avalanche which descended on the soft drink industry in the wake of the sugar tax, it now transpires that even Purdeys (a once-yummy ‘energy’ drink) made it out unscathed!

Similary, it’s RIP Cranberry juice, which in the absence of sugar, has joined the ranks of the…rank!

When trying to find some of this particular juice recently for my daughter, it became painfully apparent that the only way of nutritionally remedying a UTI nowadays, is by simultaneously putting both body and taste buds through the ‘ordeal’ of a sugar substitute.

I could rant for hours on this subject, but instead, I’m using this observation as a nod to all those drinks companies who AREN’T jumping on the sweeteners-in-everything trend.

Props to them, for ensuring that there’s still something out there for the occasional fruity/fizzy drink fans like myself, who can appreciate the health myth that is ‘no added sugar’, almost as much as they can the importance of having a sense of agency when it comes to dietary decisions.
