‘I watched the Celine Dion documentary, and now I’m her biggest fan!’

Updated: Aug 12

I recently watched the much-talked-about Celine Dion documentary, and as an unexpected side-effect, found myself newly fan-girling on the ‘Queen of Power Ballads!’

It was an unlikely turn of events, and one that my iTunes download history is now proving costly evidence of.

As for the motives…well, it’s not just that ‘My Heart Will Go On’ still manages to tug on the ol’ heart strings, all these years after it first soundtracked Leo sinking beneath the icy waves.

It’s also not entirely down to the fact that the tunes seem to have resonance now - owing to my mid-life, increasingly melodic taste in music - perhaps more so than they ever have.

Instead, I’m convinced this departure from my usual musical diet, is because the documentary has made me really like Celine… the person.

Her authenticity and honesty in the interviews was as refreshing as it was unexpected - especially for such a worldwide star.

In the context of her recent diagnosis with ‘Stiff Person Syndrome’, she showcased an attitude of sheer tenacity and determination - hallmarked by the bold statement - ‘I will sing again!’

You don’t even need to be a particular fan, for these words to prompt a visceral reaction. The kind of reaction that implores us to all the be similarly defiant in the face of adversity.

The determination and positivity - it’s as contagious as it is commendable, and for all these reasons, ‘I Am: Celine Dion’ has coloured not just my impression of Celine Dion, but how I seem to now experience her music.

It’s safe to say, it’s been a tonic, and in terms of ever doubting the importance of ‘music as therapy’ (or indeed ‘muse’ therapy) again, this documentary has quite ironically make me…‘think twice!’
