It’s a small thing, but one of the aspects of moving house that I was most excited about before we upped sticks earlier this year, was being able to sit in a garden in the evening …. with a spritz, and a book!
Fast forward to today, and the wishful thinking has evolved into a deliciously novel (pun intended) and refreshing reality!
Granted, the garden is a long way from being perfect. The grass has perished, the football goal has taken over, and the guinea pigs have commandeered the only and best patch of lawn.
However, none of this seems to matter in those early evening moments of bare-foot, prosecco-sipping bliss, when all the upheaval and stress of moving appears most, to have been worth the effort.
These moments have become, for this reason, somewhat sacred.
So sacred, in fact, that they now come with a check-list…
A nice glass
Alberto Nani prosecco (the authentic Italian brand makes ALL the difference)
Bare feet
Phone… inside, and out of site!
The solace might be short-lived, and inevitably punctuated by the odd paddling pool splash, but my soft spot for a summer sundowner still seems to serve a purpose.
Most notably, it draws a line under the day, and feeds into that idea of ‘making the most of…’, which I orient so many of my decisions around, and which is so inextricably linked to summer.
Making the most of the warm weather.
The lighter evenings.
The garden furniture.
The outside space.
The in season fruit, a slice of which has the power to make any drink feel luxe.
Its a kind of could-be-on-the beach-in-Italy luxe, and one which belies the fact that it’s really a Thursday… in Maidenhead.
